OREANDA-NEWS. April 7, 2009. On April 25, 2009, Feliks Serant - leading Russian expert in boiler equipment, environment and combustion of low-grade coals - celebrates his 70th anniversary.

Feliks Serant is the Doctor of Science (tech.), he enjoys authority with scientific circles, actively collaborates with the experts from the leading research institutes, boiler manufacturers, design institutes, and commissioning companies.

Feliks Serant is the author of 23 patents and inventor\'s certificates. Many of his innovations have found practical application and are used by the power plants both in Russia and abroad. Such inventions include, for example, multi-entry wet scrubber-ash-collectors (used by Novosibirsk CHP-4 plant, Ekibastuzskaya and Primorskaya power plants), adjustable burners (used by Novosibirsk CHP-2 and CHP-4 plants, Krasnoyarskaya GRES-2 power plant, Ulan-Udenskaya CHP-1 plant, Novo-Irkutskaya and Byiskaya CHP plants), system for horizontally and vertically staged fuel combustion and low-NOx burners which enable reducing NOx emissions by 40-50% (Ekibastuzskaya power plant in Kazakhstan, Novosibirsk CHP-5 plant, TPP Scawina in Poland and other plants).

Of special importance within the range of innovations realized under the leadership of Feliks Serant is the design of coal-fired Circular-Furnace Boiler. The boiler was successfully commissioned at Novo-Irkutskaya CHP plant which has seen its successful operation for over 10 years. This design enables a great reduction in equipment dimensions and cutting pollutant emissions. Today, this design is well-established. The textbooks for power industry students include the circular-furnace design in their case study sections. Russian and foreign companies and power plants show their interest in using CF design. 

Feliks Serant is a member of Doctor and Candidate of Science Thesis Examination Board. He represented opponency for a wide range of theses. Dr. Serant is a member of editorial boards in a number of scientific journals, a co-organizer of and an active participant in many scientific and technical conferences held in Russia and overseas. Dr. Serant published over 120 scientific and technical articles in the leading industrial editions. He is a co-author of many projects and technical solutions for the construction and rehabilitation of Russian and foreign power plants.

Feliks Serant was awarded different industrial and government prizes, including the titles of The Honoured Worker of RAO UES of Russia, Holder of Excellence Award in Power Industry. Together with a team of leading power industry experts in Russia he was awarded the Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in Science and Technology for commersialization of combustion of coals from Kansko-Achnisky coal-field and for the successful application of a 800 MW power generating unit at Berezovskaya GRES-1 in the Krasnoyarsky Krai.

In 1961 Feliks Serant graduated from the Polytechnic Institute in Odessa. His professional activity as a power industry engineer began in the Novosibirsk Division of Teploelectroproject Institute and later continued in the Siberian Division of ORGRES – Sibtechenergo.

In 1992, together with the Podolsk Machine-Building Plant (ZIO) Feliks Serant set up a new firm – SibCOTES - which specialized in design, engineering, testing and commissioning of boiler equipment. Throughout the years the company has grown into one of the leading engineering companies working for large-scale power industry in Russia and abroad.
