OREANDA-NEWS. April 1, 2009. A group of representatives of VNIIEF OJSC have come to the plant to coordinate this project.

The introduction of an ecological management system at Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant will help the plant to optimize its ecological activities, to formulate the priorities of its ecological policy and to enhance the ecological culture of its personnel.

Deputy Director General of VNIIAES OJC Yevgeny Ivanov said that the ecological activities of a nuclear power plant must be open not only to its personnel but to all concerned parties (supervisory authorities, non-governmental organizations and population).

“The introduction of an ecological management system implies internal mutual control and full transparency of the company’s ecological activities. The same is true for a nuclear power plant and its ecological policy,” Ivanov said.

Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant was the first to receive international ISO 14001 and national GOST R ISO 14001 in 2005. In 2009 certification audits are planned at the Central Office of Energoatom Concern OJSC, Volgodonsk and Smolensk NPP. In the next two years such audits will be conducted at all the other Russian nuclear power plants, including Bilibino NPP.

If the results of the audits are positive, the Concern, as the operator of the Russian NPPs, will receive ISO 14001 certificate.

The reception of this certificate will prove the significance of nuclear energy as guarantor of the energy security of Russia in its transition to sustainable development and the commitment of the Russian nuclear power plants to constantly improve their ecological activities, to enhance their ecological safety and to comply with the environment protection legislation.
