Belarusian Physics to Develop Laser Equipment for Saudi Arabia
OREANDA-NEWS. March 26, 2009. The Stepanov’s Institute of Physics of the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences and the Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz Science and Technology Center (Saudi Arabia) have concluded contracts at the amount of USD 1.3 million, said deputy director on innovation and research work of the Stepanov’s Institute of Physics.
The contracts will be carried out within two years. The funding of the works of the Belarusian scientists is expected to start this year.
Specialists of the Stepanov’s Institute of the Belarusian National Academy of Scientists will develop various kinds of laser equipment for their partners in Saudi Arabia. In particular, Belarusian specialists will develop the laser pincer designed to manipulate microscopic objects by means of laser light. At present, the laser pincers are widely used in microbiology, physics, chemistry, genetics and cytology. The laser pincer is one of the most innovation instruments used for capture and movement of living cells, DNA molecules and chromosomes. The Belarusian scientists are expected to start developing the new equipment this year.
The specialists of the Stepanov’s Institute of the Belarusian National Academy of Scientists will also develop semiconductor lasers by the order of the Saudi partners. Such lasers are used in biology, physics and medicine.
The Stepanov’s Institute of the Belarusian National Academy of Scientists develops new laser sources and various systems to study the nonlinear dynamics of complex systems, optical methods for natural objects and biological environment diagnostics. The institute studies the development of physical and technological base of creation of micro and nano-electronic devices, develops information processing methods, information and measuring systems, control systems. The products of the institute are in popular demand not only in Belarus but in foreign countries as well.
