OREANDA-NEWS. On 03 March 2009 was Turkmenistan announced a carpet contest on the occasion of Day of Turkmen Carpet. New buildings of the Turkmen Carpet state joint-stock company and Museum of Turkmen Carpets were inaugurated on this day. It should be recalled that Day of Turkmen Carpet is marked on the last Sunday of May every year.

Carpet makers of carpet weaving enterprises have already started creating their pieces. They should submit carpets to the contest jury by the end of April. Carpets should meet certain standards, i.e. they should be made of pure wool and be no less than 2,5 square meters. By density and the height of pile, pattern and national ornament structure carpets should not yield to their ancient analogues.

The contest will be held in several nominations. Carpet weavers will compete in different genre - scenic, portrait, topical and ornamental. The best carpets will be selected for the Museum of Turkmen Carpet and for the Turkmen Carpet office.

The contest aims at supporting art creativity and popularization of the national art of carpet making and identification of new talented carpet weavers and art designers, the Turkmen State News Agency (TDH) reports.
