OREANDA-NEWS  On 20 February was announced, that Ukraine possesses colossal reserves of mine methane gas that should be considered as an additional powerful energy resource. Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko told the Government’s sitting on the issues of attracting investments.

The Head of Government informed that only in the Donetsk basin the reserves of methane gas totaling 11.5 trillion cubic meters. According to Yulia Tymoshenko, we can speak today about utilization of 1.5-2 trillion cubic meters of methane gas that can be launched in 25% of mines.

According to Yulia Tymoshenko, the investment to the area of methane utilization will be recouped at the expense of the future electric power generation. The Prime Minister said that the beginning of these works allows to obtain, according to the Kyoto Protocol, additional means from the introduction of common projects on reduction of carbon emissions in the atmosphere and quota sale. “This direction is very promising for Ukraine,” the Head of Government stressed.   

Yulia Tymoshenko reminded that she had carried on negotiations with a number of Japanese companies last week, two of them submitted their proposals already concerning the investing of programs on technologies introduction of methane gas utilization. “They are ready along with the Ukrainian scientists, miners, the Ministry of Coal Industry, the Ministry of Economy to draft a complex plan on utilization of mine methane gas and direct it as a diversified source to provide the energy balance of the country,” the Head of Government stressed.
