IAEA Experts Inspected South-Ukrainian NPS
OREANDA-NEWS. January 31 through February 12 experts from International Atomic Energy Agency are working along four directions, envisaged by an agreement between Ukraine, Eurocommission and IAEA.
They are studying project safety of the first power-generating unit of SU NPS (the team is working from February 1 till 12) and compliance with international norms of the process of handling radioactive waste and a program of taking out of exploitation power-generating units (from January 31 till February 6).
Methodologies of the two missions are analogous. The first stage of verification envisages studying of reports on self-evaluation, prepared by South-Ukrainian specialists. In the aftermath, after arrival to SU NPS – discussion, specification and detailed study of the situation on the spot and preliminary conclusions take place.
The IAEA mission on the evaluation of project safety of unit №1 is chaired by Gary Johnson (USA). It comprises 10 leading world specialists in nuclear energy field from Czechia, Hungary, Germany, Croatia, Slovakia and Netherlands. The report in self-evaluation in this direction was prepared by specialists of SU NPS in synergy with general designer of the station – Energoproekt Kharkiv institute.
Evaluation of handling radioactive waste and program of elimination from exploitation on SU NPS, implemented in Ukraine, is fulfilled by 8 experts of the Agency headed by Phil Metcalf.
Final versions of the reports on the outcomes of examinations along the two directions will be readied within a month.
