Ukraine May Conclude Bilateral Contracts with EU on Transit of Gas
OREANDA-NEWS. January 14, 2009. Now Ukraine and the European Union are working over a question how to avoid in the future the present situation on the gas market. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kostyantyn Yeliseyev said at a press conference today.
“One of the variants appears studying of a possibility to conclude certain two-sided contracts between Ukraine and European partners, the European companies to secure the transit of Russian gas to the European consumers,” Kostyantyn Yeliseyev underlined. According to him, gas which is pumped to the eastern border of Ukraine, on the basis of two-side contracts ought to be delivered to Europe.
The Deputy Foreign Minister informed in this issue the Ukrainian party uninterruptedly contacts with office of the EU Energy Commissioner. The latter, according to Kostyantyn Yeliseyev, within the nearest time has to meet with representatives of European companies who deal with transit of Russian gas in order to discuss a concept concerning contracts between Ukraine and the EU countries.
Kostyantyn Yeliseyev assured the Ukrainian party is ready to pay every effort for realization of the mentioned concept. “You are well aware it is not a matter of one or two days, a respective work should be done for that. But with perspective in view we consider this idea is worth attention and, possibly worth of practical realization,” the diplomat opined.
