OREANDA-NEWS. November 27, 2008. Valentin Korolko, a representative of the Contest’s Organizational Committee, the President of the company Mainstream Communication & Consulting, has announced it today at a press-conference in the press-center of the information agency Ukrainski Novyny.

The Contest’s slogan of this year is Mediacracy, which means the rule of freedom of speech in society. The Contest organizers are confident that mass media is indeed the Fourth Estate. The professional integrity and honesty of journalists in public enlightenment on political and business processes influence a situation in Ukraine.

The similar opinion was expressed at the press-conference by the Chief Editor of the magazine Expert-Ukraine, Iskander Khisamov:  ‘The role of mass media in society is vital even despite our dependence on sponsors, advertisers, and readers. Yet, our pen can shape the social environment in the country, which is of paramount importance for Ukraine’.

The need of business community for transparent and professional press is as great as that of politicians and mass media itself. Over the last years, business has felt the power of the Fourth Estate.

‘In view of the situation in the country, mass media faces special challenges’, said the HR and Corporate Communications Director of DTEK, Sergey Kordashenko. ‘French philosopher Eisenberger warned that only immature economic and political forces try to seize control over mass media to manipulate consciousness or change social structures, and only immature mass media yields. The true call of mass media is transparent communications and boundless democratic exchange of information. Scribblers will be consigned to the rubbish bin of history’, he added.

This year the organizers have added two new nominations ‘Opening of the Year’ and ‘Business and Society’.

Only journalists with the experience of working in business journalism over a year may take part in the image nomination ‘Opening of the Year’.

The nomination ‘Business and Society’ is the first social nomination where journalists writing about the dialogue between and contradictions in the triangle ‘business-authority-society’ are nominated.
