OREANDA-NEWS  On 11 November was announced, that general work on the building of the first runway at Pulkovo Airport and taxiways’ slab is finished. Nowadays contractors are doing asphalt work, drainage system, constructing infrastructure, assembling of runway lighting, blading of the airfield. Special attention is given to the joint sawing and grounding of the runway and taxiways. Builders have to finish this work before it is growing cold, as it can reduce the joints’ quality. Power engineering specialists are planning to mount runway lighting, cable laying and overhaul of the transforming station in two months. After the reconstruction of the first runway you will find there a birdscarer and a system of early snow detection that will raise flight safety. The central-mixing plant on the territory of the construction complex will be dismantled by the end of autumn and will be assigned to Sheremetyevo Airport, the territory will be improved. Old runway surface will be recycled into road metal and will be used for equipment of the runway and taxiways.

Not only appearance of the first runway changed during the refurbishment, but also its structure. Extra #4 taxiway is built, it will help aircrafts to clear the runway faster. During the following years new taxiways will be built to increase runway capacity. Length and width of the lane will be the same: 3780 m. and 60 m. accordingly. Builders guarantee the slab will serve not less than 20-25 years.

Ordering customer is a Building committee of Saint Petersburg, main contractor is an engineering company Transstroi. The total cost of the project realized is about three milliard rubles, which are appropriated from the budget of Saint Petersburg. According to the plan the refurbishment of the runway and other objects will be finished by the end of the year of 2008. Immediate operation of the runway will start next summer.
