OREANDA-NEWS. October 06, 2008. Last week a presentation of magnesium parts production using die-casting method took place at Chamber of Commerce and Industry, reported the press-centre of VSMPO-AVISMA.

The production is located at AVISMA, an affiliate of PSC “VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation” in Berezniki, Perm region. Capacity of production of magnesium parts weighting from 0.002 kg to 4.5 kg is 3 million parts per annum. The company intends to set up manufacturing relations with the largest machine-building region.

Managers and specialists of the following Nizhny Novgorod enterprises took an interest in the presentation: Closed JSC GMZ “Mettalurg”, JSC “Gidromash”, JSC “Krasniy yakor”, JSC “Nizhny Novgorod machine-building plant” (NMZ), OKBM named after I.I. Afrikantov, Nizhny Novgorod aircraft-building plant, JSC “Sokol”, LLC “Kondor”.

Within the presentation, VSMPO-AVISMA specialists told about magnesium parts manufacturing process, properties and application of magnesium alloys in automotive industry.
It was pointed out that magnesium is attractive for successful application in automobile parts manufacture, due to its specific properties (especially, low relative density). During the last 15 years a steady trend is being observed regarding growth of demand for magnesium alloys in automotive industry. Upon average, annual increase of consumption is 12%.

Besides that, magnesium products are being using in fabrication of electric and gasoline hand tools (drills, saws, perforating machines, hand planes, grinding machines etc.), domestic water heaters.

On the assumption of market trend, PSC “VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation” made a decision on creation of magnesium alloys high-quality items production for application at automotive and hand tooling manufacturers.

Construction of experimental production area with capacity of 3 million parts per annum was commenced in 2004. It was equipped with high-precision foreign production equipment for parts casting and machining.

The area was put into operation in 2005. AVISMA started to deliver components to hand tool manufacturers in Ukraine (JSC “Fiolent”), Perm (JSC “INKAR-PARMA”, JSC “PNPPK”), Moscow (LLC “INTERSKOL") and Izhevsk (JSC “Izhevsk mechanical plant”).

In December 2007, the die-casting area was certified to ISO/TS 16949, as consequence AVISMA got an access to the automotive sector. Currently, JSC “AVTOVAZ” and JSC “GM-AVTOVAZ” are performing testis of pilot automotive components form magnesium alloys fabricated by AVISMA. If the test results are positive, magnesium components fabricated at Berezniki will be used in “Lada” and “Chevrolet-Niva” cars.

Moreover, AVISMA is negotiating with other automotive companies that are located in Russian Federation. Recently, similar presentation took place in Samara region. As a result, one of the participating companies has placed an order at AVISMA for four automobile parts manufacture.
