Mr. Nikolay Grisko, director of Krasnoyarsk branch office of “Sibirtelecom” OJSC: “Krasnoyarsk is one of the largest business centers of Russia with well-developed industry. It extensively grows and requires the adequate telecommunication network, corresponding to the major requirements of modern city. Intensive development of the city, and, accordingly, expansion of the network, resulted in theoretical limit of six-digit capacity in 2008, that subsequently deters further expansion of telephone network.  That’s why “Sibirtelecom” has initiated conversion of Krasnoyarsk to seven-digit system, so the capacity of telephone numbers will increase on 300,000”.

Conversion to six-digit numbering system in Krasnoyarsk was practically realized within one night – on October 16, 1981. Preparations for insertion of the 7th mark into the numbered index started in 2006.  Some necessary technical measures were carried out within that period: replacement of crossbar systems to digital ones, modernization of analog stations, digital stations’ software transfer to a new version. Considerable efforts via settlement and provision of cooperation with the rest of Krasnoyarsk telecom operators were taken.

At present seven-digit numbering scheme practically operates in Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Kazan, Ekaterinburg, Samara, Perm, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar, Chelyabinsk and Novosibirsk.
