Throughput of Sea Port of Saint Petersburg Up 4% in Jan-July 08
OREANDA-NEWS. August 25, 2008. In January-July 2008, throughput of Sea Port of Saint Petersburg grew by 4%, year-on-year, to 35.475.3 million tonnes, Administration of Big Port of St. Petersburg reports. In the reported period, transshipment of dry bulk amounted to 5.726.8 million tonnes (+2%, year-on-year) including 682,200 tonnes of iron ore (+56%, year-on-year), 1.127.3 million tonnes of coal and coke (-24%), 3.867.6 million tonnes of mineral fertilizers (+6%). Transshipment of loose dry cargo fell by 40%, year-on-year, to 233,500 tonnes including 223,800 tonnes of grain (-39%), 9,500 tonnes of sugar (-52%) and 200 tonnes of other loose dry cargo (-12%).
In the 7-month period, the port handled 861,400 tonnes of timber (-43%) and 9.120 million tonnes of general cargo (+2%, year-on-year) including 2.316.3 million tonnes of ferrous metal (-14%), 828,200 tonnes of non-ferrous metal (-5%), 1.409.9 million tonnes of scrap metal (-12%). Transshipment of packaged goods totaled 530,100 tonnes (+77%, year-on-year), refrigerated cargo – 2.468.3 million tonnes (+7%), other general cargo 1.567.3 million tonnes (+31%). In the reported period transshipment of containers amounted to 1,141,057 TEU (+19%). Transshipment of oil cargo amounted to 8,284.2 tonnes (+4%). In January-July the number of calls amounted to 15,865 vessels.
Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the NevaBay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation.
According to the Administration of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg, about 30 stevedoring companies are engaged in transshipment of cargo in the port.
