19 Settlements Remain Flooded in Ukrainian Western Regions
OREANDA-NEWS. As at 07.00 on August 6, a total of 19 population centers and 569 residential houses remain flooded in six western regions, particularly in Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Vinnytsia, Chernivtsi, Zakarpattia and Ternopil regions that were hit by the recent flood, the press service of the Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry reports.
Restoration work continues on holding the second stage of the flood cleanup. Water supply resumed in 46 population centers (two remained), electricity supply - in 390 towns and villages (three remained), gas supply - in 141 localities (51 remained), 77 dams and riverbank fortifications were strengthened and 216.05 kilometers of roads were reconstructed.
Emergency ministry workers pumped out water from 20,688 flooded houses (336 over the last 24 hours), and delivered 288.9 tons of food (8.44 tons over the last 24 hours), 952,177 liters of drinking water (35,622 liters over the last 24 hours) and six tons of medicine to the flood-hit regions.
Work continues on pumping out water from flooded houses and wells, cleaning roads and passages. The health inspection service is constantly monitoring the epidemiological situation. The public is being informed about the situation and measures that are being taken for its stabilization.
Over the last 24 hours, the aircraft of the Emergency Ministry and the Defense Ministry carried out 29 flights, transported 126 people (medical workers, sick people, and teams of specialists) and 5.6 tons of cargo.
The Emergency Ministry's State Weather Forecast Service ensured round-the-clock control over water levels in the rivers helping to respond to negative changes in the situation in time.
In all, 10,484 people and 2,180 units of equipment of the civil defense forces, the Emergency Ministry and the Defense Ministry, including 6,225 people and 1,555 units of automobile and special equipment from the Emergencies Ministry, are involved in the rescue work.
On August 5, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko visited Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, while Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko visited Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil regions.
The elimination of the natural disaster is under control. The central headquarters on tackling the aftermath of the floods is taking all measures necessary to stabilize the situation in the region.
