Stroytransgaz Begins Work at Volgodonsk Nuclear Power Plant
OREANDA-NEWS. August 06, 2008. Stroytransgaz has begun work on facilities for new energy blocks No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 at the Volgodonsk nuclear power plant. Rosenergoatom is customer for the project, reported the press-centre of Stroytransgaz.
As provided in the contract with the general contractor for construction, Nizhegorod engineering company Atomenergoproekt, Stroytransgaz will perform building-assembly work at start-up facilities of energy block No. 2, thereby ensuring that the block is entered into operation as scheduled.
This year Stroytransgaz will undertake preparatory work: installing the construction base and completing renovation-reconstruction work on the foundation at energy block No. 3. At energy blocks No. 3 and No. 4, the company will perform subsurface work to reduce the level of water around the foundation area and at the No. 4 facility, prepare a pile-supported floor for the reactor’s foundation. Next year Stroytransgaz will move on to construct the body of the reactor compartments of energy blocks No. 3 and No. 4.
Additional information
The Volgodonsk nuclear power plant is located on the left bank of the Tsimlyansk reservoir in the lower stream of the Don River in Rostov Oblast. The first stone for the plant’s construction site was laid on October 28, 1977. Full-pace construction began in 1979, after careful study of various options for site placement.
Energy block No. 1 of the Volgodonsk nuclear power plant entered exploitation on December 25, 2001. The station has a water-cooled power reactor, one of the safest and most widely used reactors in the nuclear power industry.
The Federal Target Program for Development of the Nuclear Energy Industry of Russia, approved by the Government on October 4, 2006, provides for commissioning of energy blocks No. 3 and No. 4 in 2014 and 2016, respectively, after commissioning of No. 2.
