OREANDA-NEWS. July 29, 2008. Lietuvos Energija is well prepared for two-month routine maintenance of Unit 2 of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP), reported the press-centre of Lietuvos Energija.

Lietuvos Energija AB will ensure the supply of electricity across the country, using generating capacities of other Lithuanian power plants and imports from neighbouring countries. One generator of the INPP Unit 2 is to be stopped on July 29, another - on August 2.

During the overhaul on Unit 2, the main electricity generator will be the power plant Lietuvos Elektrine, which will operate at a higher-than-usual capacity.

„Should any disturbance occur in the operation of the Lithuanian or neighbouring power systems while importing electricity, the reserve capacities of Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant and Lietuvos Elektrine will be used“, says Darius Masionis, Chairman of the Board and General Director of Lietuvos Energija AB. According to Mr. Masionis, while scheduling the operation of the power system at a mode with the largest domestic generation source being offline, as usually, diagrams of transmission grid were checked, emergency preparedness training for staff was arranged, operation of power systems of Lithuania and neighbouring countries – revised and approved.

The anticipated domestic demand during the overhaul of the INPP Unit 2 is around 2TWh. About 43 per cent of electricity, necessary to cover the demand of Lithuanian consumers will be generated in domestic power plants, 53 per cent – imported from Russia, Estonia and Scandinavia.

It is projected that the second reactor of the INPP after maintenance will be launched on September 30. The reactor will reach its full capacity on October 5.
