Sibirtelecom and Huawei Launch Joint Project
OREANDA-NEWS. On 28 July 2008 was announced, that Sibirtelecom and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. had launched a joint telecommunications project to build a next-generation Internet access network using Huawei GPON equipment (FTTB+FTTH solution). This will allow the company to ramp up its traffic transmission capacity and increase the length of the existing network infrastructure, and also expand access areas for customers.
“In the course of pursuing its expansion program Sibirtelecom’s been striving to find the best technology to provide access to its network that will make possible, on the one hand, to optimize operating expenses and, on the other hand, increase the speed of traffic transmission” – Sibirtelecom CEO Alexander Isaev noted. He went on to say that these advantages should be assessed by our customers for whom we’ve been creating a high-tech base for fast data exchange and transmission, pursuing a flexible tariff policy and improving our services. I am also confident that this technology will meet our expectations given the expansion of digital television services all across Siberia and ensure the high quality of video signal transmission”.
GPON technology will make it possible to install a fiber optic line directly in a customer’s apartment and provide access speed of up to 2.5 Gbps or 100 times faster than the transmission capacity of ADSL2+ solution. Implementation of GPON technology will allow the operator to provide through one line Triple Play services, i.e. Internet, VoIP, IPTV and, what’s more, CATV. Moreover, the high transmission speed will give customers a chance to watch several HDTV channels at the same time.
The launch of GPON equipment will be the first project of this class to be executed by Huawei for Sibirtelecom. Both parties are optimistic about prospects of this project in the area of passive optic networks. Among advantages of FTTH technology is the low cost, the high quality of services and technical characteristics.
“Huawei is the leader on the international market for GPON solutions and we expect this project will enable our company to strengthen its positions in Siberia. Technical advantages of the promoted solution coupled with reasonable prices helped us win a tender held by Sibirtelecom” – Andrey Belozerov, director of the Siberian regional division of Huawei Technologies, noted.
Most work under the project will be performed in August. The companies intend to put the system into operation in October. GPON active equipment will be tested in Novosibirsk in July 2008.
