OREANDA-NEWS. June 27, 2008. In the first five months of this year LDz Cargo Ltd, subsidiary of SJSC Latvijas dzelzcelsh, has transported 23 298 thousand tons of cargos, which is 11.1% more than in the respective period of 2007, when there were carried 20 977 thousand tons of cargos.

The biggest increase in cargos in the first five months - import transportations, ie. 12.5%, which reached 19 509 thousand tons, int.al. through the ports there were carried 17 556 thousand tons of cargos, they have increased by 15.6%. Overland transit and export transportations have increased by 6.9% and 4.6%, ie. 2176 and 961 thousand tons, respectively. Export transportations through the ports have decreased by 26.1%, ie. 411 thousand tons. In its turn domestic transportations have decreased by 3.4%, ie. 652 thousand tons of cargos.

In the first five months of this year there were transported the main kinds of cargos – oil products, ie. 8673 thousand tons, and coal, ie. 7386 thousand tons, which have increased by 13.1% and 28.4%, respectively, compared to the same time period of 2007. From other kinds of cargos carried by rail there was a considerable growth in grain transportation, ie. by 49.2% and reached 528 thousand tons. As regards transportation of chemical products, in the first five months of 2008 they have increased by 44.1%, ie. 996 thousand tons. Amount of metals carried by rail increased by 9.3% and reached 1206 thousand tons. Amount of carried containers increased by 11.4% and reached 23372 TEU units. Although mineral fertilizers is the third dominant kind of cargos, as a result of competition among Ventspils and Klaipeda ports, the amount of mineral fertilizers carried by rail in the first five months of 2008 decreased by 20.4%
