Russian Railways Reduces Its Impact on Environment Every Year
OREANDA-NEWS. June 26, 2008. In 2007, the Company significantly reduced its impact on the environment. Emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere from stationary objects last year fell by 9,500 tons compared to 2006 and amounted to 148,100 tons. The Company achieved these gains by switching boiler rooms to more environmentally friendly fuels, more efficient fuel combustion, introducing electric power, eliminating coal furnaces and reconstructing existing and introducing new dust and gas collecting equipment.
In 2007, the Company used 10% less water than in 2006 and reduced water consumption by introducing water-saving technologies, closed water circulation and rationing systems and metering. During the year, discharges of contaminated waste water into surface waters fell by 2.6 million cubic meters compared to 2006.
Last year, the Company also continued working to reduce the negative impact of waste production and consumption on the environment and to recycle waste in technological processes and as sources of raw materials.
Russian Railways invested more than 2.9 billion roubles in environmental protection in 2007, including 1.9 billion roubles on protecting water resources, 243 million roubles on protecting the atmosphere, more than 750 million roubles on waste protection and 16.3 million roubles on land reclamation.
