OREANDA-NEWS. June 23, 2008. In January-May, the port of St. Petersburg handled 24.026 million tonnes of cargo (+4%, year-on-year), Administration of Big Port of St. Petersburg states. In the reported period, transshipment of dry bulk cargo amounted to 3.918.5 million tonnes (+8%, year-on-year) including 552,300 tonnes of ore (+73%, year-on-year), 809,100 tonnes of coal and coke (-20%), 2.532.6 million tonnes of mineral fertilizers (+10%). Transshipment of loose cargo (grain) fell by 30%, year-on-year, to 169,200 tonnes.

In the 5-month period, the port handled 685,300 tonnes of timber (-37%) and 6.295.7 million tonnes of general cargo (+2%). Transshipment of ferrous metal totaled 1.436.4 million tonnes (-23%), non-ferrous metal - 619,200 tonnes (-3%), scrap metal - 932,100 tonnes (-10%%). Transshipment of packaged cargo amounted to 366,900 tonnes (up 2.2 times, year-on-year), refrigerated cargo – 1.889.0 million tonnes (+15%), other general cargo – 1.052.1 million tonnes (+30%). The port’s container throughput totaled 796,823 TEUS (+17%), transshipment of oil cargo – 5.002.2 million tonnes (-2%%). In the reported period, the port handled 8,442 vessels.

Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the NevaBay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation.
In 2007, the port’s cargo turnover amounted to 59.6 million tonnes. According to the Administration of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg, about 30 stevedoring companies are engaged in transshipment of cargo in the port.
