The book is a unique collection of rare archival documents and photos that show the scales of exploitation of prisoners at construction of power industry facilities and their life in the period of reprisals in 1930-1950 of the 20th century. For the first time in Russian history the authors of the edition performed a detailed analysis of the Soviet "camp economy" by the example of construction of electric power industry facilities.
Materials of the State Archive, Russian State Archive of Economy, and also "Memorial" international society were used in the book. Many of the documents give the idea of low efficiency of the camp economic system. The following is one of the examples described in the book: at construction of the first units of Volga Hydro Power Station each megawatt of capacity took at least 40 human lives.
The book was published at the initiative and with the support of JSC "RAO UES of Russia". This is one of the large-scale social projects of the company on perpetuation of the memory of victims of reprisals at construction of electric power facilities. The aim is to remind the public that each achievement of the Soviet period was based on blood and cruelty, and to avoid similar cases in future.
The book presentation will take place on July 01, 2008 at 14.00 in the conference hall of the Central Regional Universal Scientific Library Named after N.A.Nekrasov at the address: 25 (B), Sverdlova St, Yaroslavl.
