Volga-Dnepr Delivered Potable Water Installations in Disaster Relief
OREANDA-NEWS. On 04 June 2008 was announced, that Volga-Dnepr's IL-76 landed at Puerto Mont Airport, Chile to deliver two water treatment installations for Futaleufu area seriously suffering from eruption of the Chaiten volcano.
The shipment comprised two containers, 7 tons each. Due to their outsize dimensions, special IL-76 loading tooling was used to load the cargo into the aircraft.
The flight went smoothly. The problems of Futaleufu community with supply of drinking water are now resolved. Located in the southern part of Chile, the Chaiten volcano suddenly erupted on 2 May that became its first explosion in 600 years. The volcanic ash has rained down on adjacent cities of Chaiten and Futaleufu. Over eight thousand people were evacuated from the area of disaster. The cloud of volcanic ash covered an area of 150,000 sq. km., including water storage basins. The region faced a crucial shortage of drinking water. Volga-Dnepr Airlines has been continuously engaged in worldwide aid and relief missions to assist people in disasters and emergencies, carrying any types of cargo, from large-scale deliveries of food and mobile kitchens to snow-ploughs, ambulances and urgent medical supplies.
