OREANDA-NEWS. May 7, 2008. The nuclear power plant in Nizhniy Novgorod region will be built in the Vyksunsky industrial area, reports the press service of the Government of Nizhniy Novgorod region with reference to the governor of the region Valery Shantsev.

“This area has all necessary communications,” says Shantsev.

“Presently, the region, especially its northern part, urgently needs electricity. We are planning to solve this problem by building a nuclear power plant and a combined cycle power plant,” says Shantsev

Gazprom, as well as a number of companies, particularly, a company from Malaysia, have shown interest in the construction of the combined cycle power plant. The plant will consist of two units and will generate a total of 950MW. The 1st unit is to be ready by 2011, the 2nd unit — by 2014.

Earlier, the head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko recommended speeding up the project to build an NPP in the region. “The first of the four units of the plant should be ready by 2016, so, we must already start the project,” Kiriyenko said.

Over \\$10bln will be invested in the construction of the plant (four 1,150MW reactors).

The construction of the NPP in Nizhniy Novgorod region is stipulated by the Government-approved general scheme for the allocation of power facilities in the territory of Russia by 2020.
