Rosatom and Mongolia Will Finalize Intentions in Agreement
OREANDA-NEWS. On Friday, April 11, Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation and the Industry and Trade Ministry of Mongolia are planning to sign a plan of action in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy, stipulating joint financing of additional prospecting and mining of uranium and building of small- and medium-capacity nuclear power plants in Mongolia.
After his meeting with Prime Minister of Mongolia Sanjiyn Bayar, Director General of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyneko told journalists that the plan implied big work for additional prospecting of uranium deposits in Mongolia.
Kiriyenko reminded the journalists that in its time the additional prospecting of Priargun deposit gave Russia additional uranium. “If we do the same in Mongolia, that country may also increase its uranium reserves.”
The plan may also contain points on joint financing of the construction of a nuclear power plant in Mongolia.
The construction of NPP is the initiative of Mongolia. “Presently, we are carrying out feasibility study of this project,” Kiriyenko said.
“We may build small- or medium-capacity reactor, for example, KLT-40. We can offer a very wide spectrum of reactors,” Kiriyenko said.
Mongolian experts say that Mongolia has 60,000 tons of uranium, while Russian experts believe that it may have much more – 120,000–150,000 tons.
