Oktober Railways Experiments with Modular Traffic
OREANDA-NEWS. April 08, 2008. In 2007, the economic benefits of implementing the modular traffic pilot project on Oktober Railways, a regional division of Russian Railways, amounted to 15 million roubles, reported the press-centre of Russian Railways.
As part of the project, modular (double) electric trains were employed constantly on the section St. Petersburg – Glavny - Malaya Vishera. After arriving at the station Malaya Vishera, the train was split and worked separately according to a new timetable on sections between Malaya Vishera – Bologoye and Malaya Vishera - Novgorod.
The introduction of double electric trains at the Malaya Vishera hub freed up 6 trains consisting of 8 coaches each while maintaining the existing level of services and without reducing passenger numbers.
Now that the project has shown it is effective, it has been decided to extend it to include the stretches between Malaya Vishera - Volhovstroy, Volhovstroy - Kirishi, Volhovstroy - Lodeinoye Pole and Volhovstroy - Tikhvin.
In general, Oktober Railways has to find the optimal use for its available rolling stock. According experts, the transportation mobility of the population of large cities will increase by 25% by 2025.
