Leningrad NPP Pays Enhanced Attention to Safety
OREANDA-NEWS. March 20, 2008. Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant hosted a practical exercise for the heads of regional centers for civil defense and emergency response. Deputy Emergency Minister of Russia P.Plat, Director of Civil Defense Department of the Emergency Ministry S.Shaposhnikov and the head of the Chief Department of the Emergency Ministry of Russia for Leningrad region V.Kudryavtsev were among the guests.
At first, they went the water filtration and purification works of the Water Supply Department of Leningrad NPP to see the system supplying Sosnovy Bor with drinking water was safe.
Director of Civil Defense Department of the Emergency Ministry Shaposhnikov said that the system met all the standards of Rostekhnadzor and the Emergency Ministry while the upgraded alarm system of the 5-km zone was very efficient and ready to respond to any possible emergency.
The guests visited the 2nd reactor of Leningrad NPP and the emergency response center and met with the managers of the plant.
Director of Leningrad NPP V.Lebedev told them about the technological scheme of the plant’s reactors, its safety systems and the contribution of Leningrad NPP to the economic security of North-Western Region.
Special attention was given to the full-scale simulators. The guests expressed wish to send their employees to the training center of Leningrad NPP so they could improve their emergency response skills on the simulators.
Deputy Emergency Minister of Russia Plat said: “I can say that you are doing really huge work in terms of safety. So, the people living near the plant can be sure that they are strongly protected.”
Shaposhnikov said: “In 2002–2008 Leningrad NPP carried out serious work to ensure the safety of its personnel and to get ready for possible emergencies. The results are obvious: in 2002–2004, as head of the Chief Department of the Emergency Ministry for Leningrad Region, I saw with my own eyes how it all was being done. Today, we have seen that the management of Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant and Rosenergoatom Concern are doing their best to protect their personnel and the population of Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad and neighboring regions.”
The head of the Chief Department of the Emergency Ministry of Russia for Leningrad region Kudryavtsev said: "Today, Leningrad NPP has shown to its guests – people who have come from all federal districts and Moscow – that it applies the most advanced safety and protection technologies and provides strong safety guarantees to the people living in Leningrad region and St.Petersburg. Everything is done right and this proves that Leningrad NPP is very efficient and attentive as far as safety is concerned".
