Legal Migrants Make Up only Two Percent of Ukrainian Labor Migrants
OREANDA-NEWS. March 17, 2008. Only two percent of Ukrainian labor migrants work legally abroad, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Policy Viktor Ivankevych told a thematic seminar on labor migration within the framework of the project "Countering Human Trafficking in Ukraine and Moldova".
From 3 million to 3.5 million Ukrainians are working abroad. At the same time, there are only two percent of legally employed labor migrants, making up 60,000 annually.
In November 2007 the Cabinet set up an Interdepartmental Commission on Migration. The Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council may hold an international conference on migration in Ukraine in 2008.
Earlier, within the Ukraine-NATO Target Plan-2006 Ukraine undertook an obligation to NATO to approve the basis of state migration policies and the law on state migration services.
