Nerpa Shipyard Completed Modernization
OREANDA-NEWS. February 22, 2008. The project is financed by Sweden’s Nuclear Power Inspectorate (SKI) in the framework of its program for international cooperation in the field of radiation safety. Nerpa’s cooperation with SKI was started in 2003 when SKI helped Nerpa to reconstruct some of its facilities and to put a perimeter fence round its radiation hazardous sites.
The final stage of the modernization program was started in 2007. As of today the parties have created a single functional system of physical protection equipped with modern means of communication and visual surveillance. The central entrance has been equipped with automated access control system. The installation and start-up work has been carried out by Escort Center company from St.Petersburg.
The director of the program Magnus Westelind says that the project to modernize the physical protection system of Nerpa is one of the biggest projects implemented by SKI in Russia. The objective of the project is to enhance nuclear and radiation safety control in North-Western Russia and to ensure the safety of potentially dangerous activities. Westerlind says that SKI is satisfied with the results of the project. The system will be launched as soon as necessary personnel are trained.
