OREANDA-NEWS. February 19, 2008. During January 2008 2,39 million tons of cargo was handled in Klaipeda port, i.e. by 11,5 percent or by 246 thousand tons of seaborne cargo more than during the same period last year. There increased the handling volumes of all types of cargo (general, bulk and dry bulk), reported the press-centre of Klaipeda port.

The growth of liquid cargo was predetermined by the growth of handling volumes of oil products by 14,9 percent (during January 2007 681,6 thousand tons was handled and during January 2008 – 783,0 thousand tons) and liquid fertilizers by 4,4 percent (during January 2007 137,1 thousand tons was handled and during January 2008 – 143,1 thousand tons).

The growth of handling volumes of bulk and dry bulk cargo was predetermined by the increase of turnover of peat by 6 times, agricultural products – by 3 times, alloys by - 73 percent and fertilizers – by 3,7 percent in comparison with January 2007.

General cargo growth was influenced by the growth of the handling volumes of timber and forestry products by 2 times, containerized cargo – by 36,9 percent (from the point of view of tonnage) and cold cargo by  17,7 percent comparing to January 2007.

Comparing cargo turnover of January 2007 and 2008 in Klaipeda port, the biggest volume of growth was reached in handling peat (6 times), agricultural products (3 times), timber and forestry products (2 times), alloys (+73,0 percent) and containers (from the point of view of tonnage) (+36,9 percent). There decreased the handling volumes of iron ore and steel products (–38,9 percent), scrap metal (-37,4 percent), molasses (–6,9 percent), packed fertilizers (–4,8 percent) and ro-ro units (from the point of view of tonnage) (-4,3 percent) in Klaipeda port. 

Container handling increased by 37,9 percent (in TEU), and ro-ro units  by 7,5 percent. The increase of ro-ro units was predetermined by the growth of handling of auto-trailers, trailers and automobiles in  Klaipeda port. 

During January 2008 the number of ferry passengers increased by 15,4 percent and made more than 14 thousand. 

During Januaryn2008 4,19 million tons of cargo was handled in Saint-Petersburg port  (+1,9 percent). There grew only handling volumes of bulk and dry bulk cargo (+13,7 proc). General cargo decreased by 10,3 percent, liquid cargo by 2,5 percent. According to the type of cargo there increased handling volumes of iron ore (4 times), fertilizers (+26,6 percent) and containers (from the point of view of tonnage) (+15,5 percent). The biggest decrease was in handling volumes of coal (-99,3 percent), scrap metal (-40,8 percent), timber (37,5 percent), alloys (-24,0 percent) and grain (-21,5 percent.

In Primorsk  port the handling volumes of crude oil increased by 6,6 percent during January this year comparing to January 2007 (during January 2008 6,6 million tons was handled and during January  2007 - 6,2 million tons).
 
2,44 million tons of cargo was handled in Tallinn port during the first month of this year i.e. by 37,7 percent less than during January 2007. According to the types of cargo there decreased the handling volumes of bulk and dry bulk cargo by 74,4 percent or by 0,9 million tons, general cargo volumes increased by 4,1 percent or by 15,1 thousand tons and liquid cargo decreased by 24,9 percent or by 576,6 thousand tons. The biggest part in the total cargo structure of Tallinn port made liquid cargo, i.e.  71,3 percent.

179 cargo vessels called Tallinn port during January 2008, while during January 2007 there were 273 ones (by 1,7 percent more).

During the first month of 2008 359,6 thousand passengers visited the port and during January 2007- 322,8 thousand ( by 11,4 percent more).
 
During January 2008 2,78 million tons of cargo was handled in Ventspils port (+25,9 percent), and during January 2007- 2,21 million tons. There grew handling volumes of liquid cargo (+35,6 percent or by 1,8 million tons), bulk and dry bulk cargo (+14,6 percent or by 0,8 million tons). There decreased handling volumes of general cargo (-4,4 percent or by 172 thousand tons less). According to the type of cargo the biggest growth was observed in handling oil products (+47,9 percent) and coal (+16,0 percent) in Ventspils port. Handling volumes of the main transit cargo were the following – oil products and bulk fertilizers: during January 2008 1,6 million tons of oil products was handled and 303 thousand tons of bulk fertilizers.

During January 2008 12 thousand tons of containerized cargo was handled in Ventspils port (+20,0 percent, in comparison with the same period 2007).
 
2,31 million tons of cargo was handled in Riga port during the first month of this year i.e. by 25,6 percent more than during January 2007.There grew the handling volumes of bulk and dry bulk cargo and they made 66 percent (1,52 million tons) of the total turnover of Riga port. 39.1 percent or by 427,2 thousand tons more  they handled during January this year in comparison with January 2007. The growth of bulk cargo volumes was predetermined by the growth of grain handling (+32,5 percent), iron ore (+21,0 percent) and peat (+94,3 percent) comparing to January 2007. Coal handling volume increased by 57,1 percent or up to 1,08 million tons and made 47 percent of the total turnover. Bulk fertilizers handling decreased by 2,2 percent or up to 176,2 thousand tons in comparison with January 2007.

392,3 thousand tons of general cargo was handled in Riga port (by 11,1 percent more than during January 2007). According to the type of cargo, timber made the biggest part of general cargo (192,4 thousand tons, i.e. by 11,2 percent more than during January 2007) and containerized cargo  (152,4 thousand tons or by 23,9 percent more than during January  2007).

The volume of liquid cargo increased by 1,2 percent in Riga port during January 2008 in comparison with January 2007 and made 397,9 thousand tons.

During the first month of 2008 16,2 thousand passengers visited Riga port and during January 2007 there were 12,3 thousand (by 31,2 percent more).
 
417,9 thousand tons of cargo was handled in Liepaja port during January 2008, i.e. by 25,6 percent more than during the same period last year. According to the type of cargo the volume of bulk and dry bulk cargo increased by 23,5 percent (during January 2008, 192,8 thousand tons was handled). Such growth was reached by the increase of handling volumes of grain in Liepaja port (during January 2008 136,1 thousand tons was handled or by 45,2 percent more than during January 2007). The growth of general cargo was predetermined by the growth of the handling volumes of timber (+6,3 percent or 2,5 times and during January 2008,  123,8 thousand tons was handled). The growth of liquid cargo by 68,8 percent (during January 2008 101,4 thousand tons was handled) was predetermined by the increase of 72,9 percent oil products handling (during January 2008 m 77,1 thousand tons was handled) and crud oil handling by  +10,3 percent  (during January 2008 15,9 thousand tons was handled) in Liepaja port.
