Port of Gdynia Completes Repairing Works on Grain Elevator
OREANDA-NEWS. February 4, 2008. In Port of Gdynia repairing works on the Grain Elevator - object registered in the monuments register - which lasted since September 2004 has been completed.
Because of continuous transshipments works of Baltic Grain Terminal the repair progressed in special safety conditions. Construction works consisted in replacement of elevation - elevation plates from sandstone (imported during previous century's thirties from Italy) were forged and new elevation has been placed, despite it is from a different material, it has faithfully reconstructed original appearance of the object. Because of monumental character of the grain elevator all works progressed under supervision of Regional Monuments Conservator. Total costs of repair estimated about 3.5 million zlotys.
The grain elevator was constructed in thirties of XX century on the Indyjskie Quay according to the engineer Paszkowski's project. It was given for use in the year 1937. It was designed to handle export and import of grain and its enrichment. Until the II World War, the Terminal was focused on export of Polish grain, used as a transit warehouse for states bordering the Danube River.
After the war Gdynia's elevator took over significant part of grain import to Poland, and during eighties and nineties also its export. In May, year 1992 thorough reconstruction of elevator's technological equipment and coast infrastructure has begun. Second stage of modernization began in July 1996, when 195 piles were driven under new steel silos with capacity of 14 thousands tons. In July 1999 the project works concerning construction of floor warehouse for storing grain with capacity of 25 thousands tons were began. It was given for use in spring, year 2001. This investment allowed for increase storing abilities in the elevator's complex to 52 thousands tons.
The elevator is one of four objects of Gdynia's port registered in the monuments register, next to the Naval Terminal, adjacent to Warehouse no 1 and Warehouse H.
The Baltic Grain Terminal Ltd. handles all types of grain and feed cargo such as wheat, barley, rye, colza seeds, and horse bean; feeds: soya-grain, colza, and beet pulps. In the year 2007 on the BCT 719,1 thousands tons of cargo have been transshipped.
