OREANDA-NEWS.  On 30 January 2008 Pyotr Aksyonov, chairman of the committee of directors of JSC Aeroport Vnukovo, declared that the second runway of Vnukovo airport will be placed in operation after reconstruction in 2008.

Currently the airport has only one runway.

“The reconstruction of runway No 2 and construction of a new air traffic control tower with a total area of 4,000 square metres were completed in 2007. Now all essential equipment is being installed, tuned and tested at these objects. The second runway together with the new air traffic control tower will be commissioned in this year,” Mr Aksyonov said.

Vasily Aleksandrov, general director of Vnukovo airport, reminded that the reconstruction of the second runway had been launched since 2005. “By now the lighting has been already installed on the runway,” the official added.

Vnukovo airport serves roughly 100,000 flights of more than 140 Russian and foreign airlines yearly. The airport’s route network includes more than 200 courses of regular and charter flights
