Road Tolls to Be Introduced for Cargo Trucks in Latvia
OREANDA-NEWS. January 25, 2007. Next year, all cargo trucks with a weight of over 12 tons will be subject to road tolls, Maris Pekalis, director at the Transport Ministry's Traffic Department.
It is planned that the toll for the use of roads for a 24-hour period will be EUR 11 (LVL 7.7), however, truck drivers will be able to purchase road passes for a period of a week, month or even a year, said Pekalis.
"Our truck drivers pay road tolls in other European countries, now foreign truck drivers will have to pay road tolls to use Latvian roads," said Pekalis.
The Transport Ministry predicts that the total yearly revenue from the road tolls could be approximately LVL 10 million, which will be used to improve road infrastructure as well as the construction of parking lots by border control points.
