OREANDA-NEWS. January 25, 2007. The main task of the new concern "Nuclear Fuel of Ukraine" will be the supply of Ukrainian NPPs with necessary fuel, department director of the Fuel and Energy Ministry Natalya Shumkova said, reported the Official website of www.kmu.gov.ua.

According to her, the task was not realized by the UkrAtomProm. To meet it one should step up the development of the uranium and zirconium production, as well as the construction of facilities for production of its own nuclear fuel.

The new concern will consist of nuclear fuel cycle enterprises only.

Presently, a draft resolution of the government on liquidation of UkrAtomProm and establishing the Nuclear Fuel of Ukraine concern has been readied.

The new concern will not have dual subordination, as it was with UkrAtomProm.

The Cabinet of ministers of Yulia Tymoshenko canceled the resolution of the previous government on creating UkrAtomProm, as one of its first moves. This was what the president was pressing for, who appealed to the Constitutional Court of Ukraine regarding the illegality of its creating.

The president and the new government believe the resolution on establishment of UkrAtomProm contradicted the law "On grounds of national security of Ukraine", as it provided for an opportunity of alienation of property, which privatization is forbidden, these in particular are NPPs, which belong to the single energy system of the country securing its integrity.

Earlier, Fuel and Energy Minister Yuriy Prodan instructed to develop by 2009 the feasibility study of the project of construction of the plant for production of elements of nuclear fuel.

Creating of the full cycle of nuclear fuel production by 2030 has been envisaged in the Energy Strategy of Ukraine Through 2030.

Presently, Ukraine provides itself with some 30% of uranium, necessary for nuclear fuel production.

There are 4 NPPs in Ukraine with 15 reactors of the set capacity of 13,888 megawatt.
