Eurasia Logistics Develops Industrial Container Terminals
OREANDA-NEWS. January 22, 2008. "Eurasia Logistics", the largest commercial and industrial real estate developer in the CIS (GREENGATE network) has announced a new project.
Starting with 2008, all industrial parks (both already built as well as those currently under construction) are going to have on-site container terminals, totaling 130 hectares. The company does not wish to disclose the amount of investment into this project.
Container freight is becoming more and more widespread, for example, in St. Petersburg container freight takes up 35% of all transportation services in the region. Container terminals give our customers the opportunity to process containers right here, in the industrial parks, thus significantly lowering their logistics costs. Nikolai Ditzman, Head of the "Eurasia Logistics" marketing department, says that by creating container terminals in all its parks "Eurasia Logistics" is going to provide yet another excellent service to its clients.
GREENGATE network of industrial parks is going to become the only network of logistics complexes to have container terminals.
Globally, container freight takes up more than 60% of the world’s freight traffic (with the exception of loose goods, bulk liquids and those goods that are transported via gas and oil pipes). In Russia container freight takes up 15% of the Russian freight traffic -approximately 4 million 20-foot containers (TEU) per year. For comparison – in Shanghai alone container freight was 21 million TEU in 2006, while globally the figure is 380 TEU per year.
"Eurasia Logistics" has decided to start this new project due to the fact that the international transportation corridor "East-West" (from China to Europe via Russia), along which the company’s complexes are located, is now rapidly developing.
Russian Federal transportation development strategy provides for the development of ITC "East-West" as an alternative transportation way from China to Europe. In 2006 approximately 15 million TEU were transported from China to Europe (total cost of freight – approx. $5 billion), more than 95% was shipped by sea. More than 100,000 TEU is transported via Russia. According to the British consulting company "Drewry", the total transportation volume along the ITC "East-West" can increase to 34.9 TEU by 2016, while Russia will have at least 15% of this volume.
