Throughput of St. Petersburg Port Up 10%
OREANDA-NEWS. January 18, 200. In 2007, the port of St. Petersburg increased its throughput by 10%, year-on-year, to 59.608.5 million tonnes, Administration of St. Petersburg seaport informs. In the reported period, transshipment of dry bulk cargo amounted to 9.735 million tonnes (+25%, year-on-year) including 768,100 tonnes of ore (+16%), 6.573.8 million tonnes of mineral fertilizers (+26%), 2.308.1 million tonnes of coal and coke (+27%). Transshipment of loose dry cargo (grain) totaled 665,600 tonnes (+19%). Transshipment of timber amounted to 2.428.1 million tonnes (-6%). Transshipment of general cargo – 14.917.2 million tonnes (+1%) including 4.252.8 million tonnes of ferrous metal (-6%), 1.464.1 million tonnes of non-ferrous metal (-5%), 2.494.4 million tonnes of scrap metal (-19%), 655,700 of packaged cargo (+17%), 3.883.5 million tonnes of refrigerated cargo (+8%), 2.166.7 million tonnes of other general cargo (+42%). Container turnover of the port grew by 11%, year-on-year, to 17.127.8 million tonnes (1,697,720 teus). Transshipment of oil products totaled 14.713.6 million tonnes (+13%). In the reported period, the number of vessels entering and leaving the port amounted to 29,257 units.
Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation.
In 2005 the port’s cargo turnover amounted to 4282.2 thou tonnes. According to the Administration of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg, about 30 stevedoring companies are engaged in transshipment of cargo in the port.
