Atomstroyexport Negotiates for Building NPPs in Middle East
OREANDA-NEWS. December 14, 2007. “We are actively negotiating with Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Turkey,” the president of Atomstroyexport Sergey Shmatko said on Thursday. “We are also negotiating with Bangladesh and Vietnam. We also have plans in Thailand, which is considering the possibilities of developing its nuclear power industry.”
Shmatko said that in Turkey Atomstroyexport is considering two potential sites: either the shore of Mediterranean or the bay of Sinop. “We can even build two plants if we find companies who will be ready to sponsor the projects. Our possible rival in Turkey is Canada with its CANDU reactor.”
Shmatko said that a few days before the EU had given official permission to the construction of Belene NPP in Bulgaria. “It was a complicated and politicized procedure,” Shmatko said noting that the EU’s consent had paved the way for our company into new markets.
