Annual Conference on Russian-Finnish Direct Railway Links Was Held
OREANDA-NEWS. On December 03-04, 2007 Russian Railways and VR Group Ltd (Finnish railways) held their annual conference on direct railway links between Russia and Finland in Helsinki, reported the press-centre of Russian Railways.
The Russian Railways’ delegation was headed by the Company’s First Vice-President Vadim Morozov and Vice-President Mikhail Akulov, while Henri Kuitunen, chairman of VR’s management board, led the Finnish delegation.
The VR delegates informed their Russian colleagues about the work to reconstruct the infrastructure on the section between Lahti and LuumДki, which will allow for higher speeds of up to 200 km/h. The section is scheduled for completion toward the end of 2010.
The Russian Railways’ delegation reported that a government commission had approved the project for high-speed passenger services between Saint Petersburg and Helsinki, which will be financed by joint investment on the part of Russian Railways and the Investment Fund.
At the conference, topics discussed included developing container transport between China and Finland and Finland and Moscow and the shipment of automobiles from Finnish ports to Russia.
The two sides expressed their approval of the joint venture Oy ContainerTrans Scandinavia Ltd in transporting containers by direct trains and set a target of increasing container transportation between Russia and Finland to 50,000 Twenty-Foot Equivalent containers (TFEs) per annum, of which 20,000 TFE containers will go to Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
