Ukraine Postpones WTO Accession to 2008
OREANDA-NEWS. Ukraine, which hoped to complete 14-year long talks to join the World Trade Organization by 2007 close, has to postpone its accession again, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers reported, reported the Official website www.kmu.gov.ua.
"In June 2008 Ukraine may complete preparations for accession. And if in early autumn 2008 the council (WTO) ratifies the agreement on Ukraine's accession, in 30 days Ukraine will become a member of the World Trade Organization," the press release said summing up outcomes of a non-official session of the working group, which was held in Geneva last week.
The press service of the Government, referring to Ukraine's representative to the WTO headquarters Volodymyr Baluta, reported that with a view of reaching the goal by 2008 fall Ukraine has to implement a series of procedures, which will be possible after Ukraine signs a bipartite protocol with Kyrgyzstan, which will be the last 50th protocol.
"When joining the WTO the accession talks are regarded as final after the last protocol is signed," the report said.
If the Kyrgyzstan issue is settled by 2007 close, in February 2008 Ukraine and the WTO working group will ready a provision containing Ukraine's obligations in the sphere of commodity tariffs, market accession regimes and the rural support limits, the government explains.
On October 25 the report of the working group into Ukraine's accession to the WTO wad listened in Geneva.
On Monday Ukraine's First Vice Prime Minister Mykola Azarov announced that Ukraine might sign the protocol with Kyrgyzstan in one or two months if that country abandons its non-trade claims.
During 2005-2006 the Ukrainian parliament adopted 38 legal acts necessary for accedence to the WTO.
