Kaliningrad Railways and Volkswagen AG Begin Joint Project
OREANDA-NEWS. On October 15, 2007 Kaliningrad Railways received the first consignment of 200 Audis assembled at Volkswagen’s production plants in Germany at the Zheleznodorozhny border crossing. Volkswagen executives are expected to observe the reloading procedures at Chernyakhovsk, reported the press-centre of Russian Railways.
The cars will go by trains using the European narrow-gauge track to Chernyakhovsk, where RealTransAuto, a Russian Railways’ subsidiary, will reload the cars to Russian broad-gauge wagons by means of specially developed equipment.
The route was developed especially for Volkswagen. If the technology proves popular, the volume of cars imported to Russia could increase to two freight trains per day.
