Throughput of the Port of St. Petersburg Up 13% in Jan-Aug 07
OREANDA-NEWS. In January-August 2007, throughput of the port of St. Petersburg grew by 13%, year-on-year, to 39.427.6 million tonnes. In the reported period, transshipment of dry bulk cargo totaled 6.561.1 million tonnes (+47%, year-on-year) including 510,000 tonnes of ore (+15%), 4.307.8 million tonnes of mineral fertilizers (+41%), 1.697.0 million tonnes of coal and coke (+95%). In the 8-month period the port handled 443,400 tonnes of loose dry cargo (+40%) including 443,200 tonnes of grain (+77%). Transshipment of timber totaled 1.741.9 million tonnes (-9%). Transshipment of general cargo amounted to 10.039.8 million tonnes (similar to the level of 2006) including 2.988.0 million tonnes of ferrous metal (-10%), 985,900 tonnes of non-ferrous metal (-7%), 1.728.0 million tonnes of scrap metal (-17%). Transshipment of packaged goods totaled 366,400 tonnes (+23%), refrigerated cargo – 2.586.7 million tonnes (+14%), other general cargo – 1.384.7 million tonnes (+37%). Transshipment of containers grew by 14% to 11.043.2 million tonnes (1,104,469 teus). Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 9.598.1 million tonnes (+13%) including 9.590.3 million tonnes of oil products (+13%).
In the reported period, 9,686 vessels entered the port and 9,626 vessels left the port of St. Petersburg.
Port of St. Petersburg is located on the islands in the mouth of the Neva-river, in the Neva Bay at the eastern side of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). The Big Port of St. Petersburg includes the mouth of the Neva-river, the Neva Bay, Kronshtadt and the complex of structures protecting St. Petersburg from flood (the dam). Icebreaker assistance is carried out within winter navigation. According to the Administration of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg, about 30 stevedoring companies are engaged in transshipment of cargo in the port.
