Moscow Memorial Service Commemorates 11 September 2001
OREANDA-NEWS. September 13, 2007. The memorial service commemorates the sixth anniversary of 9/11 and was held at the American Orthodox Church.
A message from Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, was read out at the service: "We extend our sincere sympathies to the American people and grieve with them on this said day."
According to the Minister, interfaith dialogue is of huge significance in the struggle against terrorism.
William Burns, US Ambassador to Moscow, said that in spite of the progress in fighting terrorism, it was clear that terrorism still threatened all countries and continents.
Vladimir Yakunin, president of Russian Railways, was at the memorial service and recalled the derailment on Oktober Railways on 13 August 2007 following the detonation of a home-made bomb. Yakunin said that faith, patience, love and respect to loved ones should form the basis of the fight against this evil.
Also present at the memorial service were Alexander Torshin, deputy chairman of the Federation Council, Lyubov Sliska, Deputy Speaker of the Duma, Antje Yosich, Secretary of the Representative of the Holy See in Russia and other government, religious and public figures.
The service concluded with six strikes of the memorial bell at Yekaterinskaya Church in memory of innocent people killed by terrorists.
