OREANDA-NEWS. On August 28, 2007 President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus was on a two day working visit in Poland, reported the Presidential website http://www.president.lt.

During the visit, the Lithuanian President met with President of Poland Lech Kaczynski. President Kaczynski thanked Mr. Adamkus for his role in harmonizing positions of the European Union member states on the EU reform treaty to be approved in October in Lisbon Summit.

Presidents of Lithuania and Poland agreed on joint actions in implementing the European Union energy policy by involving the EU Eastern neighbors.

Lech Kaczynski confirmed Poland’s interest to participate in the building of a new nuclear power plant. Presidents expressed hope that advanced technologies will be used ensuring integration of all Baltic States into the Union for the Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity (UCTE).

Presidents agreed that a joint Lithuanian-Polish enterprise will be set up in the nearest future for the purpose of building the electricity bridge.

At the meeting, Presidents also talked about joint actions in developing the European Union Neighborhood Policy which would give broader EU integration prospects to Ukraine, Moldova and other Caucasus countries.

Mr. Adamkus and Mr. Kaczynski discussed about transport infrastructure. Presidents believe that strategic projects Rail Baltica and Via Baltica must be implemented without any delays. They underlined the necessity to act hand in hand in the European Union in solving the issue of building Augustow bypass.

Presidents of Lithuania and Poland agreed to continue aiming for positive changes in resolving issues relevant to the Lithuanian and Polish ethnic minorities. President of Poland Lech Kaczynski assured that they will try to solve the issue of building an extension of the Lithuanian school in Punsk.

President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus met with Polish President Lech Kaczynski in his summer residence. Until now, non-formal meetings of this type here were attended only by the US President George Bush and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
