In his speech, Yushchenko said he was glad the country’s major political forces supported his social policies. “As president, I am pleased there is no political force that is taking part in the election campaign which has refused to implement [my] social policies,” he said, adding that these policies must be “radically changed.”
Yushchenko said Ukraine’s economic growth should result in higher social standards. “This is not an electoral gesture for me. I just want to say that Ukraine, having such economic achievements, deserves a better life.”
The president said a snap parliamentary election on September 30 was a “democratic means to resolve the parliamentary crisis.” “Today is a good occasion to speak about radical changes in the system of government.”
Yushchenko described the opening ceremony as a “significant event for the region” and added that it would help boost local revenues and create 300 jobs.
