Vl. Yakunin Discusses Reconstruction of the Trans-Korean Main Line
OREANDA-NEWS. Vladimir Yakunin, President of Russian Railways, met the South Korean ambassador to Russia, Li Hyu Hen, to discuss the reconstruction of the Trans-Korean Main Line.
In 2006, trilateral meetings and negotiations took place between Russian Railways, North Korean Railways and South Korean Railways, during which the three sides agreed their positions on reconstructing the Trans-Korean Main Line, strengthening cooperation and implementing joint projects aimed at attracting additional freight volumes to the Trans-Siberian Railway.
The three sides agreed that the reconstruction of the Trans-Korean Main Line should begin with a pilot project to rebuild the railway between Khasan Railway Station in Russia and the North Korean port of Rajin, a distance of 52 km.
At the moment, discussions are underway on creating a joint company or consortium to modernize the port of Rajin and subsequent operation on this section of track.
North and South Korea have entrusted Russian Railways to set up an investment pool to implement the project.
Dates are now being finalized for the second official trilateral meeting between Russian Railways, North Korean Railways and South Korean Railways.
