RAO UES Starts Implementation of Projects under the Kyoto Protocol
OREANDA-NEWS. May 30, 2007. RAO "UES of Russia" starts implementation of projects under the Kyoto Protocol. This was made possible by the Resolution on Practical Implementation of the Kyoto Protocol Mechanisms in Russia signed by Chairman of the Russian Federation Government Mikhail Fradkov, reported the press-centre of RAO "UES of Russia".
RAO UES enterprises will now be able to go ahead with about 40 projects designed to improve energy efficiency and cut CO2 emissions. According to experts, these projects may generate over EUR700 million in funds for the Russian electricity industry, which will be used for modernize the existing and build new generation capacity using the most advanced power equipment.
Now that the Government Resolution has been adopted, Russia will be able to complete its first Kyoto Protocol project launched in 2005. Two years ago two subsidiaries of RAO "UES of Russia"—OAO "Orenburgenergo" and OAO "Khabarovskenergo"—signed an agreement with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (DEPA) on the sale of "emissions reductions units" (ERUs) generated by the modernization projects at two power plants.
Two boilers (No. 9 and 10) at the Amurskaya CHPP-1 will be converted to gas fuel. At the Mednogorskaya CHPP, a steam-driven modular turbine (TG-3,5/10,5) and two modular gas turbine units (ATG-10) with steam waste heat boilers. To date, the project has been suspended due to the lack of a legal framework.
