OREANDA-NEWS. On May 06, 2007 a new shop for chipping liquorice root was opened at the Buyan agroindustrial enterprise. In the previous years, the Buyan enterprise exported only liquorice extract and pressed liquorice root, reported the Presidential website http://www.turkmenistan.gov.tm. Chipped liquorice is to be delivered to South Korea. Liquorice is an effective expectorant, and has been used for this purpose since ancient times. In traditional Chinese medicine, liquorice is commonly used to relieve a spasmodic cough and compared to ginseng by its healing characteristics. Hippocrates and Galen widely used liquorice root in medicinal compositions. Avicenna highly appreciated the healing qualities of liquorice.


The estimated capacity of the new shop is over 100 tonnes per annum. The activities to broaden the range of products and manufacture high-quality products will be expanded. According to the resolution of the President of Turkmenistan, an enterprise producing liquorice extract with the capacity of 1,000 tonnes per annum is to be constructed in Turkmenabat. The newly-constructed plant is to be put into operation in early 2008. The agricultural reforms initiated in the country provide the labour collective with vast opportunities for increasing the export potential and flooding the domestic pharmaceutical market with natural medicinal preparations.
