OREANDA-NEWS. On April 20, 2007 UC RUSAL, the world’s largest producer of aluminium and alumina, has signed an Agreement of Cooperation with Rostechnadzor, the Federal Agency for Environmental, Technological, and Nuclear Monitoring, reported the press-centre of UC RUSAL. The Agreement of Cooperation has two main aims - firstly, to ensure UC RUSAL’s HSE management systems at its industrial facilities are in line with state standards and secondly, to improve HSE management systems across Russian companies. The Agreement will result in the creation of joint project offices to improve legislation in the area of industrial safety and environmental protection.

Part of the project is developing a database of Russia’s best practices in the non-ferrous metals sector. RUSAL and Rostechnadzor have previously worked together on Rostechnadzor’s central laboratory (CLAIT). The laboratory has been working together with the Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter since 2005 carrying out joint studies and analysis of environmental impact. Commenting on the agreement, Valeriy Draganov, UC RUSAL Director for Government Relations, Natural Monopolies, and Protection of Resources, said: “The agreement gives us the opportunity to efficiently communicate with and receive feedback from Rostechnadzor on the issues of reporting, methodology and identification of risk in the field of environment and industrial safety. On our part, we will be working to introduce best practice in line with state controls using the experience of UC RUSAL’s international facilities in Italy, Ireland, and Sweden”.
