Durex wants a condom emoji
That's why condom maker Durex wants the Unicode Consortium, the nonprofit group that organizes and approves new entries for the Unicode writing system, to add a condom to its next batch of emojis. The company released a video of its open letter to the Unicode Consortium on its Twitter page Monday.
The letter asks the Unicode Consortium to approve Durex's design for a condom emoji during a meeting scheduled this week at Adobe Systems in San Jose, California.
In the letter, Durex writes that adding a condom emoji to the visual language would offer more than just something for giggly teenagers to text each other when adults aren't looking. The condom emoji will "empower them to talk openly about protection" noting that communication is "vital to prevent STIs, HIV and AIDS."
