Limerick Generating Station Unit 1 Returned to Service
OREANDA-NEWS. Operators returned Limerick Generating Station Unit 1 to service on April 17 marking the end of the unit’s scheduled refueling outage that began March 21.
During the outage, workers performed more than 10,000 detailed inspections, maintenance activities and equipment upgrades. In addition, about one-third of the nuclear fuel was replaced during the outage.
“The work performed during this outage will help us provide this region with reliable, around-the-clock, electricity for the next 24-month operating cycle,” said Limerick Station Site Vice President Rick Libra.
More than 1500 temporary skilled workers supported Limerick’s 800 employees during the refueling outage. These additional workers created a significant economic boost for area hotels, restaurants and other retail businesses.
Limerick Generating Station is located approximately 21 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The plant produces enough carbon-free electricity to power about two million homes.
