Becker Professional Education Awards over $250,000 in 2016 Scholarships
Now in its fourth year, the scholarship program honors Newton D. Becker, who passed away in 2012. He founded Becker Professional Education in 1957, pioneering a new approach to preparing candidates for the CPA Exam. The program, which has now awarded more than \\$1,000,000 in financial assistance, was created to continue his legacy by helping bright, dedicated students and professionals fulfill their dreams by earning the CPA credential and furthering their accounting careers. This year, 22 full scholarships valued at \\$3,393 each, and 107 half scholarships valued at \\$1,697 each have been awarded.
“This year’s recipients have exemplified the integrity and character that our founder demonstrated,” said Timothy McClinton, vice president of U.S. Accounting at Becker Professional Education. “We are honored to provide each recipient with the resources they need to pursue the CPA credential, as we know it will positively impact their careers and help to further establish them as leaders in their field.”
To qualify, applicants had to meet the requirements to sit for the CPA Exam at the time of enrollment, demonstrate financial need and, through a personal statement, exhibit traits important to Newton Becker: high moral character, strong leadership qualities and commitment to community service.
One of Becker’s 2016 scholarship winners, Daniel Opuni-Mensah, explained the impact of the scholarship and how it is helping him achieve his goals. “A few years ago I struggled with my health,” he said. “I battled cancer with everything I had, which caused my accounting dreams to be put on hold. Today, I think about having the CPA initials added to my name in the near future and I feel privileged to have Becker support me in my efforts to reach this goal.”
“As a recipient of the Newton D. Becker Scholarship, I am one step closer to working in a small or midsize accounting firm,” said Bryan Batchelor, another Becker scholarship recipient. “Eventually, I would like to work as an auditor and apply the skills I learned while studying to become a CPA.”
