Ukraine will increase consumption of rolled steel by one-third this year
OREANDA-NEWS. Steel products consumption in Ukraine is expected to increase this year approximately by 25-30% to 4.4 million tonnes y-o-y*. This forecast was provided by Roman Kurashev, Metinvest Group’s Marketing Director at the meeting of the Interdepartmental Scientific and Technical Council of Ukraine on the Issues of Secondary Treatment and Continuous Casting of Steel. Metinvest Group performed as the General Partner of the meeting.
According to Roman Kurashev, in 2016 Ukrainian producers managed to adapt to some extent to infrastructure issues connected with the armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine and grow production volumes.
In opinion of the speaker, capacity modernization with a focus on cost reduction and strengthening of the product portfolio would help Ukrainian producers to withstand the global challenges. In particular, local companies should focus on the development of products for the domestic market and import substitution.
Metinvest’s Marketing Director thinks that preserving a competitive advantage is possible for the Ukrainian steel makers through the expansion of the product line with high added value, for example, thin sheet steel (cold rolled, galvanized and polymer coated).
"Companies with a sustainable business-model, low-cost, or clear differentiation idea will survive: niche players, narrowly specialized manufacturers," summarized Metinvest’s representative.
Roman Kurashev noted that the development of the domestic market is impossible without the state policy directed at production revival, stimulus measures for construction sector and capital investments. On their part, the steel makers should be reducing cost through operational improvements.
The meeting of the Interdepartmental Scientific and Technical Council of Ukraine on the Issues of Secondary Treatment and Continuous Casting of Steel took place in Kyiv on 31 October. Prominent scientists took part at the meeting, including Vladimir Naidek and Valery Geets, the academicians of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Professor Aleksey Smirnov, and representatives of iron and steel works.
The Interdepartmental Scientific and Technical Council of Ukraine on the Issues of Secondary Treatment and Continuous Casting of Steel was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in January 2005 in coordination with the Ministry of the Industrial Policy and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. This permanent body promotes progressive technologies in ferrous metallurgy. The Council conducts visiting sessions to discuss issues faced by the metallurgical enterprises of Ukraine. The recommendations of the Council are approved by the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and are submitted to the Government for consideration.
The Council is comprised of leading specialists of relevant ministries, scientific and research institutes, universities and design organizations, iron and steel works, machine building enterprises, associations and groups of companies. The Physics and Technology Institute of Metals and Alloys of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine is appointed as the base organization of the Council. Vladimir Naidek, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences chairs the Council.
